Grant & Stone have had a great year for moving forward by expanding its builders Merchants to 5 with the addition of Maidenhead. It has moved from its original location of 24yrs to Mill End Road which has enabled us to keep a larger and more diverse range of products. Now a new electrical wholesalers in Hemel Hempstead takes the electrical division to 3 (High Wycombe, Maidenhead and Hemel Hempstead), this enables us to compliment the plumbers merchants in Hemel Hempstead and builders merchants in Pinner.

Grant & Stone’s Big Announcement

Grant & Stone, the family run Builders Merchants which has been trading for nearly 25 years, announces the opening of one of its most exciting new branches in recent years.

As of the 24th June 2011, Grant & Stone has acquired the Meakins branch in Maidenhead. As fellow independent builders merchants in the home counties, their branch is well suited to complement the existing plumbers merchants, bathroom showroom and electrical wholesalers in the area and our overall portfolio.

We are also very pleased to announce that long standing member of the company, Alan Kent, formally the assistant manager of our Pinner branch has been promoted to branch manager of this new builders merchants.

This is exciting news for our ongoing expansion plans over the coming years. We also have a some more very exciting news to follow shortly.

Grant and Stone - Weather Update

The Chilterns, along with most of the country, has already been hit with extreme weather this winter. We are making deliveries when it is safe to do so as we would not want to put our staff at risk.

We appreciate the majority of the main roads are clear but a lot of side roads are treacherous and we have to rely on the branch managers knowledge of the delivering area as well as our experienced drivers to make the final call.

Our Electrical Branch in High Wycombe has started using a 4x4 vehicle in order to make as many urgent deliveries before Christmas as possible.

We hope to deliver as much as we possibly can as soon as we can and appreciate our patience and understanding in these circumstances.

IMPORTANT Aqualisa Digital Showers - Cold Weather Advice

Some customers may experience problems with their digital showers in extreme cold weather. We have created the guide below to explain why this happens and what steps can be taken.

This guide is applicable to the following models:

Opto
Visage
Quartz
Axis
HiQu
Ilux
If you aren't sure which model you have or if your shower is a digital shower, please look at our digital shower guide.

Symptoms

Lights illuminate on the controller but there is no water.
No response from the start button and no lights on the contoller.
Shower starts briefly, and then shuts off.
If the digital processor box is located in your loft area or a location that is subject to the cold, then please refer to the information below.

What is the processor?

The processor box is the mixer part of your digital shower or bath filler; it is where the hot and cold water are blended. Your processor box will look like this:

Why won’t it work?

Located inside the processor box is a device called a “thermistor”; this is what helps regulate the water temperature. In extreme cold conditions (0 deg. C +/- 2 deg.) the thermistor will register a fault which places the processor into a safe mode to help protect it.

How do I get it working again?

In some cases, it may be as simple as turning the power supply off to the processor box; leaving it for a few minutes and then turning it back on again
If the water supplies feeding or inside the processor are frozen; then this must be thawed. We recommend using a hair dryer or a lamp to gently defrost the processor. The power will need to be turned off and then back on again after a few minutes to reset the processor box and clear the fault.
How do I avoid this happening again?

Ensure that the pipe work to and from the processor box is lagged (special tubular foam insulation). See images below.
Place a cardboard box over the processor. Important:

Do not tightly wrap the processor; ensure that there is at least 2-3 inches of air clearance between the box and the processor. For pumped models ventilation holes can be made in the outer cardboard box.
Do not cover the processor or the covering box with insulation or items such as blanket.
Ensure that there is no loft insulation underneath the processor; this will help warm it from the rising heat of the room below.
A small piece of lagging can also be placed over the processor’s thermistor (This is for black processor boxes only). See images below.
Ensure that the thermistor wire is not excessively bent and that the cover fits back as it should.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In the warmer seasons it may be advisable to remove the covering box if ambient temperatures rise excessively.

CHILDREN have been kitted out in fluorescent jackets to keep safe when walking to school after the death of a pedestrian in West Wycombe raised the profile of a road safety campaign.

West Wycombe Combined School travel plan co-ordinator, Jill White, 42 said after the sad death of Judy De Gelas in June everyone has been working together to help to try to improve road safety.

Mrs De Gelas died after being hit by a car driven by Jacqueline Loosley while walking along West Wycombe High Street on June 2 with her two grandchildren. Loosley, 47, was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Grant and Stone have donated 300 high visibility jackets in various sizes for pupils to wear to and from the school.

She said: “I want to tell everybody- out of something so horrible and so dark with losing Judy to this road- I am trying to do something about it.

“I am trying to stop the traffic and keep these babies safe.”

She said her 9-month-old puppy, Sox, was killed on the road last year which left her three children aged seven to 11 devastated. Mrs White said if the driver was not speeding her puppy would still be alive.

Mrs White said: “I couldn't live with myself if that was one of our children or someone else's child. We need to stop the speeding. The school is taking it very seriously.”

All the children walk to the school in Church Lane from Chorley Road, Bradenham Road or from West Wycombe Road and some parents park at the garden centre in Chorley Road and walk.

She added: “Drivers will see this whole mass of brightly coloured jackets and drivers will hopefully slow down.

“It is just fantastic. From myself and the travel team I would like to thank Grant and Stone. It wasn't an easy project for them to do. I would also like to thank the support of the parents.”

Marketing manager Darren House, 31, from Grant and Stone said for the last two or three years they have been looking to provide high visibility jackets for schools, after they started giving running vests to Wycombe Half Marathon and Marlow Five runners.

He added: “As a family business we like to support the local community and hopefully they will support us in return.”

Mrs White said she has been working with the police on the issue of speeding and will continue to work on other ideas including a poster competition.

She said if other businesses think they will be able to sponsor the campaign to get in touch with her on 07860338617.

Buckinghamshire County Council has agreed to install Vehicle Activated Sign in the village which is due to be put in before the end of the financial year.

It’s official – when it comes to offering professional painters and decorators a matt emulsion with ultimate opacity, leading trade paint brand Johnstone’s has it covered.

Securing its position as one of the UK’s leading trade paint brands, rigorous independent blind tests conducted by the Paint Research Association (PRA) have revealed that Johnstone’s outperforms competitor brand Dulux in the key area of opacity on matt emulsions. With professional contractors claiming that opacity is one of the most important factors to consider when selecting a matt emulsion product, the results confirm what many existing users of Johnstone’s have already discovered for themselves. By undertaking such tests, Johnstone’s not only hopes to reassure trade users about the quality of its own product ranges but also provide valuable information about the difference in opacity between two of the biggest names in the UK trade paint market.

The independent opacity test, which was in accordance with the official quality standard BS EN ISO 2814:2006, compared the equivalent matt emulsions of both Johnstone’s and Dulux to find which products offered the highest opacity when applied at the maximum recommended spreading rate. The PRA tested the following product combinations, Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt and Dulux Vinyl Matt, Johnstone’s Flat Matt and Dulux Flat Matt, Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt and Dulux Diamond Matt and finally, Johnstone’s Jonmat and Dulux Supermatt. The results of the tests proved that each of the Johnstone’s matt products gave higher opacity levels than the Dulux equivalents at the maximum recommended spreading rate.

Johnstone’s official spokesperson Martijn Venema, comments: “We are obviously delighted with the findings of the independent tests conducted by the Paint Research Association and feel that Johnstone’s position as one of the leading trade brands in the UK is now firmly secured. We appreciate that opacity is one of the most important factors when specifying and using matt emulsions and we are extremely proud to now receive official confirmation that Johnstone’s outperforms Dulux in this area”.

PHEX Exhibition

Thursday 20th November

Grant & Stone took forty eight of its plumbers and bathroom installers to the Plumbing and Heating Exhibition (PHEX) at Stamford Bridge the home of Chelsea Football Club.

The day started at 10am with two coaches; one leaving our new Oxford Plumbers Merchants and Bathroom Showroom. This then moved on to its second pick up, our head office and Electrical Wholesalers in High Wycombe. The other coach collected customers from Aylesbury Plumbers Merchants and Bathroom Showroom and then moved on to its second pickup our Amersham Plumbers Merchants and Bathroom Showroom. Both coaches then left around 11.15am and headed for PHEX show.

Amazingly both coaches of customers disembarked at Stamford Bridge more or less at the same time, just after 12.15pm. Buffet food vouchers and entry badges were given out with a map as to where the bar was at 2.15pm for drinks on the 5th floor.

At 4pm both coaches left for the Toby Carvery, Denham full of hungry plumbers.

Once inside the Toby Carvery drinks were at the bar for an hour, followed by food and more drinks. Coaches departed at 8.15pm on a reverse journey dropping customers off after a great day out. (see below)
